Lecture Series "Mathe Macht! Mathematik in der Praxis - 09.12.2025 - Departement of Mathematics

On December 9, 2025  Dr. Lukas Ostrowski (Carl Zeiss SMT GmbH) and Dr. Jim Magiera (Carl Zeiss AG - ZEISS Innovation Hub @ KIT) presentde the practical work of mathematicians at the “MatheMacht!” lecture series. The lecture “Photonics and Mathematics - A Vision for Innovation” provided an insight into the Zeiss Group, its various divisions, and its innovations and developments.

In particular, the optics developed by Zeiss for high-NA EUV lithography systems, which enable structure sizes of less than 10 nanometers in chip manufacturing, were presented. The projects presented demonstrated the use of mathematical methods in the implementation of new technologies and data-driven processes. These could be adopted from mathematics studies. Both speakers studied mathematics at the department and completed their doctorates at SimTech. In the subsequent discussion, the question of the requirements for mathematical training and programming skills was explored in depth, among other topics.
