Science Day took place on Saturday, May 24, 2025. Once a year, the University of Stuttgart opens its laboratory doors. Exhibits, lectures, hands-on experiments: this is how research and teaching come to life.
The Department of Mathematics was represented with various offers:
Lecture: How can machines learn from data?
In his lecture, Prof. Ingo Steinwart posed the question: how do computer programs that can learn from data work and how can we understand them? In his lecture, he also showed the central role that mathematics plays in this.
At the Mathematics Department's “Beat the mathematicians” game stand, visitors were able to compete against mathematicians in combinatorial games. They were able to find out how to play and win without making mistakes. This was very well received by young and old players alike. The courts were surrounded by spectators and players around the clock.
Topological puzzles, wrestling with the dice snake, throwing knots. Various puzzles from the student coucil mathematics encouraged the children to think, puzzle and discover.
At the award ceremony for the mathematics and physics student competition, the challenge cup went to the Landesgymnasium für Hochbegabte in Schwäbisch Gmünd.
“Studying mathematics” was the topic of the lecture given by Prof. Marcel Griesemer to interested pupils as part of the Bachelor Info Day.
