Ask us!

You will have many questions. Information, many helpful tips and also detailed guidance through our program can be obtained from our Student Council Mathematics [de], an organization of students from our various degree programs.  It provides advice, organises various activities and events. You will find it in the building Pfaffenwaldring 57 on floor 8, room 8.326 or on Facebook. For questions concerning your degree program you can contact our study program manager Dr. Friederike Stoll or your dean of study. If you have problems related to the introductory courses in Linear Algebra or Analysis, our department organises supplementary tutorials with experienced tutors, who will answer your questions.

Induction week

Department and Student Council organise each year in October a welcome event for new students of the Mathematics ( B.Sc.) and Mathematics Education (B.A.) degrees. Location and time and further detailed information is provided on the Website of the Student Council.

The department also provides important information on its degree programmes via  Bachelor Mathematics (B.Sc.) [de] and Bachelor Mathematics Education (B.A.) [de].

Eight semester Bachelor programmes

Since winter term 2017/18 the MINT-Kolleg offers a possibility to study the Bachelor Mathematics (B.Sc.) or Bachelor Teaching Mathematics (B.A.) degree programmes in eight instead of six semesters. Further information can be found under MINT-Kolleg: Programm Mathematik.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mintkolleg offers a preparatory course [de] in mathematics which takes place before the regular lectures start in October. Many students use this to ease their difficult transition from school to university.

Already before the beginning of the semester you will find information online:

We also recommend to take part in the induction week of the student council and the department.

Usually you need to register for the exercise groups during the first week of lectures. This is usually done via internet. It is therefore important not to miss the first lecture. Everything you need to know about the course will be announced there, further information may also be found on the lecture's homepage.

A frequent misunderstanding: You have to register in exactly one exercise group, on exactly one date, not in several or even all of them. All exercise groups deal with the same content. In the lectures Analysis 1 and Linear Algebra 1 these are 90 minutes of exercise groups per week.

Another note about C@MPUS: In order to create a timetable there, you have to register for the course. C@MPUS also offers the possibility to register for the exercise groups, but some courses use their own registration system.

Registration for exams us done via C@MPUS during a fixed registration period in the middle of the semester. You must not miss this period, a later registration is only possible in exceptional circumstances.Your examination regulations allow for the possibility of withdrawing from a registered examination up to one week before the exam.

It may happen that you do not get a certificate for successful participation in problem classes or do not pass a module examination after the first semester. This is a serious warning signal, but you will not be exmatriculated yet. However, it does mean that you should recognise and resolve the causes of your difficulties and that you have to work harder.

You have to pass the orientation exam by the beginning of the fourth semester at the latest. Further deadlines can be found on the pages for the individual study programmes.

  • the beginning of the lecture period! If you notice too late that the lectures have already started, then you have usually already missed a lot, for example the registration for the exercise groups, overview and introduction of the lecture, and also first important basics. Under semester dates [de] you will find an overview of important dates.
  • the exam registration period [de]: Without registration you cannot take part in the exams.
  • the re-registration period [de],  during which you must pay the semester fee for the coming semester.
  • the dates of exams [de] for which you have registered.
