Stuttgart is officially part of the European research excellence in intelligent systems and machine learning since fall 2021; now the new unit of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) invites to its kick-off event celebrating the official start of their operations. The scientists of the University of Stuttgart and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems will present themselves and the planned activities of the Stuttgart ELLIS Unit on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at Vaihingen campus.

The directors Ingo Steinwart and Andreas Bulling, as well as the rector of the University of Stuttgart Wolfram Ressel, will introduce the unit, its planned activities and its members. This will be followed by a keynote talk by ELLIS Fellow Bernt Schiele (Max Planck Institute for Informatics) and further presentations by Paul Bürkner (University of Stuttgart), Katherine J. Kuchenbecker (Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems), Michael Pradel (University of Stuttgart), and Steffen Staab (University of Stuttgart).

The unit’s PostDocs and PhD students will be introduced through lightning talks and poster presentations. A networking event will close the day’s activities.

This event will take place in English on the Vaihingen campus of the University of Stuttgart (Pfaffenwaldring 47.03), Germany, on July 21st. Talks will be recorded and made available online after the event. The event will be held in English and is open to everyone; no registration is required.

The detailed program is available on the ELLIS Stuttgart webpage.

Research focus of the Stuttgart ELLIS Unit

The Stuttgart ELLIS Unit brings together an interdisciplinary team of outstanding researchers at the University of Stuttgart and the Stuttgart site of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) who advance research in learning and intelligent systems from four synergistic perspectives: Interactive Intelligent Systems, Natural and Programming Language Processing, Learning Theory, and Robot Learning.

Success for the University of Stuttgart

Rector Prof. Wolfram Ressel says: "It is a great success for the University of Stuttgart that we are part of the ELLIS network. The initiative focuses on the further development of modern artificial intelligence, which has a positive impact on the economy and society. This fits with our vision 'Intelligent Systems for a Sustainable Society' and our strategic goals. I look forward to the presentations of our scientists at the launch event, which will now allow the Stuttgart ELLIS Unit to really take off."

"ELLIS is a European network that aims to strengthen artificial intelligence research in Europe. It holds huge potential for Stuttgart as a research location, for example through connections to other top-class universities. And it perfectly complements Baden-Württemberg's Cyber Valley," says founding director Prof. Andreas Bulling.

The other founding director of the Stuttgart ELLIS Unit, Prof. Ingo Steinwart, adds: "European visibility is worth a lot. We are already noticing that. After the foundation of our ELLIS unit, we succeeded in filling a junior research group leadership position with our Cluster of Excellence SimTech, which had been advertised before without success."
