Mathematician as political advisor on legal issues

October 7, 2019 / ISA

The Stuttgart mathematician Christian Hesse advised the all-party commission led by Bundestag President Dr. Wolfgang Schaeuble on reforming the electoral law.

Hesse's proposal foresees a tighter calculation of the number of seats and a reduction of the number of constituencies to 200 in order to avoid overhang mandates. By contrast, only the Union, which benefits from overhang mandates, was reluctant to do so. Wolfgang Schaeuble: "Mr Hesse, if you come before the Union Group with this proposal and survive, I will invite you to dinner."
