The centenary of quantum mechanics as a mathematical description of fundamental physical concepts is an opportunity to highlight the diverse significance of quantum phenomena to the general public. The project “Art and Quanta: Quantum2025 in Art Museums” implements this goal in an unusual way: several events at art museums in Germany, primarily lectures or guided tours, are intended to illustrate to the art-loving public the role that “quanta” play in the visual arts.
The project started in April 2025 with a one-day symposium and a lecture by Prof. Franz Gießibl on “The Uncertainty of Image Makers” at the University of Stuttgart, as well as a lecture by Nobel Prize winner Klaus von Klitzing on “Light, Quanta, and Max Planck” at the Schauwerk Sindelfingen. This was followed by guided tours and lectures by Dr. Marc Scheffler at various art museums and art institutions in Stuttgart and throughout Germany. The project was also represented at the “Quantum Effects” trade fair and at the “Leibinger Begegnungen” event organized by the Berthold Leibinger Foundation. The project concluded with a laboratory and art tour at ZAQuant and the Vaihingen campus.
The project was initiated by Dr. Marc Scheffler (1st Institute of Physics) and supervised by Katja Stefanie Engstler (IGT/IADM).
