In dry and pleasant weather, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Stuttgart celebrated its annual Summer Festivity on 17th of July 2025 – an afternoon filled with stimulating conversations, exciting insights into current research, and a relaxed, social atmosphere.
One of the highlights was the lecture by Professor Hannah Markwig on tropical geometry, which attracted a large audience. Her passion for the topic was evident throughout the lecture and resonated with the audience. In the following interview, she also explained why this particular branch of geometry is called "tropical": the name honors Brazilian researchers who were among the first to explore this area of mathematics.
Afterwards, around 300 guests – students, staff, faculty, and visitors – gathered on campus for a barbecue to celebrate the end of the academic year together. With plenty of food and a cheerful mood, the evening was a great success.
Another highlight of the event was the presentation of the Faculty Teaching Awards by the students, recognizing instructors for their outstanding dedication to teaching.
The physics students presented their awards:
- Best Experimental Lecture in the Winter Semester 2024/25: Prof. Peter Michler; Experimental Physics VI: Advanced Molecular and Solid-State Physics
