Ceremonial colloquium on the occassion of the 80th birthday of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Harro Walk

Harro Walk celebrated his 80th birthday on June 4, 2019. On this occasion a ceremonial colloquium of the Department of Mathematics took place.

On October 28, 2019, Prof. (em.) Dr. rer. nat. Harro Walk, former professor at the Institute of Stochastics and Applications of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Stuttgart, was honored at a scientific colloquium.

After welcome greetings from Prof. TeknD Timo Weidl, Vice Dean of the Department of Mathematics, scientific lectures were given by Prof. Dr. Michael Kohler (Technical University Darmstadt, former doctoral student of Prof. Walk) and Prof. Dr. László Györfi (Budapest University of Technology and Economics, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences), and a reception ensued.

The doctoral supervisor Prof. Dr. Bodo Volkmann and numerous former doctoral students of Prof. Walk followed the invitation to the ceremonial colloquium.

After graduating from high school in 1958, Harro Walk studied in Stuttgart first physics, then mathematics with the diploma in 1964. He received the Dr. rer. nat. degree in 1966 with the thesis "Über das Randverhalten zufälliger Potenzreihen". His habilitation in mathematics was in 1970 with the thesis “Approximation unbeschränkter Funktionen durch lineare positive Operatoren”.

After taking on deputy professorships at the Universities of Tübingen and Karlsruhe, he was full professor at the University of Essen Gesamthochschule from 1975 to 1979 and at the University of Giessen from 1979 to 1982, with a visiting professorship at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in spring 1979.

From 1982 until his emeritus status in 2007, Harro Walk held the chair of Stochastics in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Stuttgart. He has published numerous articles in mathematical journals and is co-author of the monographs "Stochastic Approximation and Optimization of Random Systems" (with L. Ljung and G. Pflug; Birkhäuser 1992) and "A Distribution-Free Theory of Nonparametric Regression" (with L. Györfi, M. Kohler and A. Krzyżak; Springer 2002).
