Faculty 8 celebrated the 2023 Summer Festivity on campus on July 7, 2023 with the presentation of the Mathematics Department and Physics Department Lecturer Awards

On July 7, 2023, the summer party of Faculty 8 took place on the Vaihingen campus in bright summer weather. Numerous members, alumni and friends of the faculty accepted the invitation of the physics and mathematics departments and Faculty 8.

Prof. Dr. Norbert Hungerbühler (ETH Zurich, Professorship Mathematics & Education) gave a lecture with the title " Nanu, let's take a closer look..." "Even behind seemingly simple, elementary questions, beautiful and sometimes sophisticated mathematics is not infrequently hidden, if you only take a closer look."  With this in mind, Prof. Hungerbühler embarked on a foray through some entertaining topics in mathematics in his lecture, such as the question of whether there is a body with exactly one equilibrium position. Yes, a Gömböc! Or whether a function can be reconstructed if the assignment of the function values to the arguments has been lost.

In the subsequent interview with Sophia Möll and Licia Szedresi (Student Council Mathematics and Physics ), Prof. Hungerbühler answered questions about his enthusiasm for mathematics, the specifics of the Swiss university landscape, and his professorship in Mathematics & Education, among other topics.

Lecturer awards of the Student Councils Mathematics and Physics

This year again, the lecturer prizes of the Mathematics Department and the Physics Department were awarded at the summer party. The basis for the awarding of the prizes was the lecture survey of the department. Irini Malegiannaki and Svenja Loy presented the prizes to the lecturers and assistants of the mathematics courses:

The prize for the best compulsory lecture went to the lecture "Linear Algebra 2" by Prof. Meinholf Geck and the assistants Dr. Lacri Iancu and Dr. Eirini Chavli.

The prize for the best undergraduate elective lecture went to the lecture "Stochastic Processes 1" by Jun.-Prof. Marco Oeasting.

The prize for the best Master's lecture went to the lecture "Represatation Theory of Algebras" by Priv.-Doz. Ferderik Marks.

Emma Pascocci and Sophia Möll from the Physics Division presented the prizes for the best lectures to the following winners:

Prof. Hans Peter Büchler received the award for the lecture "Fortgeschrittene Quantentheorie/Advanced Quantum Theory"; compulsory lecture in MSc Physics and MSc PHYSICS.

Prof. Peter Michler received the award for the compulsory lecture "Advanced Molecular and Solid State Physics/Advanced Experimental Physics"; MSc Physics and MSc PHYSICS .

Dr. Tim Langen was awarded the Lecturer Prize for the lecture "Advanced Atomic Physics/Fortgeschrittene Atomphysik"; coDr Tim Langenmpulsory elective lecture in BSc Physics.

In hot summer weather, the traditional summer party of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics took place on the square in front of the lecture hall building Pfaffenwaldring 53. This year the departments organized a quiz in which the prize winners of mathematics and physics competed against each other. After an exciting match, the prize winners of physics, Prof. Michler and Prof. Büchler, won by answering the last question.

Our summer party was musically framed by the band " Unimusikanten"" and of course there were again cool drinks and grilled food.
