Mathe Macht! Amazon: Mathematics meets Generative AI

Lecture Series "Mathe Macht! Mathematik in der Praxis - 17.12.2024 - Departement of Mathematics

Under the title “Mathematics meets Generative AI”, Dr. Lenon Minorics presented his field of work as a Senior Applied Scientist at Amazon. The students and doctoral candidates were given a deep insight into the fundamentals and architecture of large language models, an important sub-area of artificial intelligence. A text “Welcome to my ...” was clearly broken down into substrings / tokens, then into numbers and finally into vectors in order to find the correct sentence completion with the help of stochastic optimization methods. The training of artificial intelligence in the pipeline through to its practical use were also exciting topics of the presentation.

In the question and answer session that followed, topics relating to the lecture, but also to the application process, the advantages of a doctorate, programming experience or understanding theoretical problems were addressed.  It was particularly interesting for the students and doctoral candidates that Dr. Minorics studied and completed his doctorate at the department and only took the step from studying to working a few years ago.
