On June 24, 2024, Ms. Valerie Ladenburger from Württembergische Versicherung AG visited the Department of Mathematics. In her lecture "Modeling of elementary events using the example of hail", which she gave as part of the lecture series "Mathe Macht!", she provided insights into the work of risk modeling in the insurance industry. She began by discussing the necessary mathematical principles from extreme value theory and explained how these can be used to determine the expected future amount of damage from rare, particularly severe hail events. In particular, she addressed the challenges posed by the limited availability of data and the need to integrate data from different sources. Following the lecture, Ms. Ladenburger answered a number of questions from interested students and doctoral candidates, both on specific modeling and on her day-to-day work.
