In the event series Mathe Macht!, Dr. Jochen Schmid gave an exciting insight into the structure and projects of the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics (Kaiserslautern) and his field of work as a mathematician.
The vast majority of the projects of the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics are industrial projects. From the large portfolio, three projects in the field of radiotherapy, chemical engineering and Informed machine learning were presented in more detail by Dr. Schmid. Taking into account defined project goals and constraints. as well as the expert knowledge of the clients, a mathematical modeling is created for the respective project, which leads via simulations and optimizations to a tool for the respective users. The large number of manipulated variables that make the tool flexible to use is one of the challenges posed to the project team. The mathematical analysis for the generation of IT solutions was clearly illustrated by Dr. Schmid.
After the presentation, questions were asked by the numerous participants about the process of the project work, the team structure and the perspectives within the Fraunhofer Institute. A lively discussion followed, which could again take place in presence after the long Corona break.
